The Sycamore High School Music Department is proud to announce the 2013 Concerto Competition Winners: Paige Phelps, Danielle Pivonka, and Owen Ruff. Each year, high school seniors are encouraged to apply via auditions for the competition, and these three talented performers were selected from severalsenior applicants this year. Each winner had the pleasure of performing their solo piece accompanied by their peers with the Symphony Orchestra.
Paige Phelps, on Cello, performed Felix Mendelssohn’s Concerto in E Minor, Op. 64, Allegretto non troppo, Allegro molto vivace. She was selected to perform in the IMEA All-State Orchestra her Sophomore, Junior, and Senior year, and was First Chair in the IMEA District Orchestra her Senior year. She was awarded the National School Orchestra Award from her peers this May. Paige will be studying at Augustana College majoring in Music Education this fall.
Danielle Pivonka, on Violin, performed Souvenir d’un lieu cher, Op. 42, No. 2, Scherzo by Tchaikovsky. Danielle was selected to participate in the IMEA Orchestra all for years in High School and the IMEA All-State Orchestra (the highest level at the IMEA Conference) her Sophomore, Junior, and Senior years. Shereceived all Division I ranks at her Solo & Ensemble competitions and participated in Pit Orchestra all four years of high school. Danielle will be studying Violin Performance at North Park College in Chicago.
Owen Ruff, on Violin, performed Symphony No. 5 in D Major, Op. 10, Choral by Felix Mendelssohn. Owen was selected to participant in the All-State Honors Orchestra his Junior year. Due to college auditions, he was unable to participate in IMEA All-State his Senior year.Owen has won the NIU Suzuki Talent Scholarship and the Midwest Young Artists Composition Contest. He is a member of the Acaso Quartet that recently won the Midwest Young Artists Discover Chamber Competition. Additionally, the Acaso Quartet was quarter-finalist in the recent Fischoff Chamber Competition. He is also an Illinois State Scholar. Owen will be attending the University of Texas at Austin studying Violin Performance with Brian Lewis.
